How to get started with improving your nutrition?

Your nutrition plays a major part in reaching your health and fitness goals. But it can be overwhelming and confusing to find the right person to work with. If you are looking for someone to help you with your nutrition, here are three tips to consider.

Tip 1: What is their education and experience?

You want to know the education and experience of the individual that you are working with. With the popularity of macro-counting, many “health coaches” are taking online certifications and offering nutrition services. While many may be qualified to give you general nutrition advice, you want to know that you are receiving accurate information to establish long-term healthy eating habits.

If you want someone with the most education, I suggest working a Registered Dietician (RD) or a certified nutritionist who can provide the most science-based, results-oriented approach. A registered dietician (RD) has a four-year degree and a national certification, along with experience working many different clients so they can customize your nutrition based on your individual needs.

How do you find a nutritional coach or registered dietician? You can get a recommendation from family or friends. Or you can search online for someone that has the credentials that you are looking for. I was introduced my registered dietician, Stephanie Mull, through a family member. Her help has been invaluable in learning more about my nutrition needs for my goals.

Tip 2: What is their nutrition approach?

Along with considering the education and experience, you want to find out the type of philosophy and methods that your nutrition coach offers. You want to hire a qualified nutritionist that offers a nutrition program that promotes long-term, sustainable nutrition habits.

Although you may not know the exact type of nutrition program to follow, I suggest that you look for a nutrition coach that is offering a macro-based eating plan that is customized to you. If you have specific health and fitness goals, you are going to need a specific nutrition to get you there.

The main purpose of hiring a qualified and experienced nutritionist is to have a customized program, tailored to you. Of course, you want to stay clear of the quick-fixes or promised weight loss.

Tip 3: What is the cost of their services?

It is a smart investment to work in a nutritionist to help you reach you goals. But you likely need to consider what type of pricing plan works for you.

Most nutritional professionals have different plans that they offer in working with them. You might only be able to afford having them create a custom nutrition plan for you without additional support – but it is a great starting point!

However, if possible, you should consider a nutrition plan that helps you with accountability by talking with them either weekly, bi-weekly or monthly. They can adjust your macros or calories and be able to give you more information or tips depending on what is working.

Set Yourself up for Success

You will not regret hiring a nutritional professional and taking the time to understand your nutrition so you are not spinning your wheels with reaching your health and fitness goals. Find the right person to work with that has the a sustainable approach and affordable plan and you will be on your way to success.
